Flights

Most of the flights you can find on Google Flights, Skyscanner, Kayak etc. However South Africa Airways do not always show up on these search sites, and have some good optoins.

You may find some flights that have a very long layover in Johannesburg. Sometimes you can get around this by booking a flight to Johannesburg, and then the final leg to Harare separately. Make sure to allow for time to collect your bag and check back in in Johannesburg.

Accommodation

Both hotels and Airbnb are good options for places to stay. You may find yourself with a bit more space and privacy with an Airbnb. Harare is generally a safe city. The best locations to stay are within the green area marked on this map below.

Communications

Not all carriers have international roaming available in Zimbabwe, make sure to check with yours before you leave.

An alternative way to stay connected is to pick up a local sim card from Econet. The rates are relatively affordable and you can pay as you go, but you will need to go to an Econet store with a local and be prepared to spend some time getting set up. There is an Econet store at the airport, Borrowdale Village and other commercial hubs. If you do plan to get a local sim, please reach out so we can help.

Paying for Things

The safest option is always USD cash. Most supermarkets also take Visa/Mastercard, as well as some restaurants and cafes, but your best bet is to depend on cash. If you are ever asking if you can pay with card, you’ll need to mention it’s an “international” card.

ATMs can be found at Borrowdale Village, Avondale Shops and in the CBD, and you should be able to withdraw USD cash with your debit cards there.

If you find yourself needing cash and not able to do so through ATMs, there are a bunch of remittance servies whereby you can send yourself cash for pick up at a number of locations. These include Western Union, Moneygram, World Remit, Remitly, Ria and Xoom.

Getting Around

Zimbabwe is very car dependent. Check out these rental services - Impala & Europcar.

There are also rideshare options, primarily through the InDrive and Vaya Africa apps. These services require USD cash.
